216 is the Magical Number for House Democrats.  With yesterday’s release of the House’s budget reconciliation package known as the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) has indicated that the House could vote on both the Senate’s current proposal of H.R. 3590 and the House’s reconciliation package as early as Sunday afternoon.  (more…)

Health Overhaul Hits Homestretch [03-15-10]

Now, finally, the voting is set to begin on federal health legislation that leading Democrats claim could pass the House as soon as this coming weekend.  Democrats are still wrangling support in the House, where the action begins this afternoon when the House Budget Committee meets to start the process.  On Wednesday, the House Rules Committee will get down to business on the reconciliation bill. When its work is done, which could take a couple of days, the full House will get its crack at a vote. (more…)

Senate Passes Additional Extensions of Fee Schedule and Therapy Caps [03-12-10]

This past week, the Senate voted 62-36 to pass H.R. 4213, the Tax Extenders Act of 2010. The vote on final passage came shortly after the Senate agreed to Chairman Baucus’ Manager’s Substitute by voice vote and invoking cloture on the underlying bill with a 66-23 vote. (more…)

Singing Speech Therapists [03-08-10]

Stroke patients who’ve lost their speech can be taught to speak again – by singing, reports The Wall Street Journal.  Strokes can damage parts of the brain’s left hemisphere that enable us to speak.  But neurologists at Harvard found a way to rewire stroke victims’ brains by teaching them to sing what they want to say.  Singing engages the brain’s right hemisphere instead of the left.  (more…)

CMS Issues Memoranda on Therapy CAPS & Fee Schedule [03-05-10]

In the wake of the President signing the Temporary Extension Act of 2010 into law, CMS released two memoranda concerning the physician fee schedule and the exceptions process for outpatient therapy services. The memoranda are set out in their entirety below.
