Medicare Providers Must Begin to Revalidate Enrollment By March 2013 [08-13-11]

All providers and suppliers who enrolled in the Medicare program prior to Friday, March 25, 2011, will be required to revalidate their enrollment under new risk screening criteria required by the Affordable Care Act (section 6401a). (Providers/suppliers who enrolled on or after Friday, March 25, 2011 have already been subject to this screening, and need not revalidate at this time.) (more…)

CMS Issues SNF PPS Final Rule for FY 2012 [08-02-11]

On July 29, 2011 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS) final rule for Fiscal Year (FY) 2012. The final rule will be published on August 8, 2011 and will be effective October 1, 2011.  The final rule had very few changes from the proposed rule.  A summary of the final rule is provided below: (more…)

Intense Exercise May Protect Aging Brain [06-17-11]

Older people who regularly exercise at moderate to intense levels may have a 40% lower risk of developing brain damage linked to strokes, certain kinds of dementia, and mobility problems.  Research published on June 8th in the journal Neurology says the MRIs of subjects who exercised at higher levels were significantly less likely to show brain damage caused by blocked arteries that interrupt blood flow — markers for strokes — than people who exercised lightly. There was no difference between those who engaged in light exercise and those who did not exercise at all. (more…)

Paraplegic Man Stands, Steps with Assistance and Moves His Legs Voluntarily [05-20-11]

A team of scientists at the University of Louisville, UCLA and the California Institute of Technology has achieved a significant breakthrough in its initial work with a paralyzed male volunteer at Louisville’s Frazier Rehab Institute. It is the result of 30 years of research to find potential clinical therapies for paralysis.  The study is published today in the British medical journal The Lancet. (more…)

ACO Regulations Are Here! [04-01-11]

The very much anticipated proposed regulations for the new Shared Savings Program under Section 3022 of the Affordable Care Act are finally here.  The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services just made available a display copy of the proposed regulations.  These regulations are expected to be published in the Federal Register on April 7, 2011.
