The Mid-Ohio Valley Safety Council recently recognized the safety achievements of Marden Rehab and Health Care Plus at its 2010 awards ceremony.  This year’s presentation was its largest yet, with over 80 area businesses recognized for various safety awards. Accepting the awards were Russ Delaney (Marden Rehab) and Brian Connolly (Health Care Plus).  The keynote speaker, retired Fire Chief Tom Dempsey, spoke of the devastating nursing home fire in Marietta in 1970. Over 40 years ago, a devastating fire at the Harmar House nursing home killed over 30, yet provoked strong changes in fire code not just state-wide, but nationally. National and state fire codes fundamentally were changed due to the deadly mistakes magnified during the fire, such as carpets and drapes made of flammable and toxic materials, doors that don’t shut automatically, no sprinkler system and some dementia residents tied to their beds, unable to escape.
