A BRIEF "FOUNDING" HISTORY OF MARDEN
Randall A. Mason and Charles H. Manning founded the first of the Marden Companies, Marden Petroleum Exploration Company, Inc. (“MPX”), in 1984. MPX was involved in drilling and operating oil and gas wells in Ohio and West Virginia. The name Marden is a combination of MAR(ietta) and DEN(ver), as when energy operations were initiated, the Company had an office in Marietta, Ohio and Denver, Colorado. There never was a Mr. or Ms. Marden. The Marden Companies primary focus is the delivery of ancillary healthcare services.
Marden Rehabilitation Associates, Inc. (“MRA” and parent company of today’s Marden Companies) was founded in July of 1989 by Randall A. Mason and Harry J. Kuhn. The decision to enter healthcare services was made as a result of the decline in the domestic oil and gas business in the late 1980’s. Marden was investigating the redeployment of its resources and Mr. Kuhn had background in the therapy business. This combination led to the birth of today’s Marden Companies. Private shareholders, most of who were oil and gas investors of Marden Petroleum, financed MRA. Most of the founding shareholders remain involved with the Company, and several serve as Directors. Mr. Kuhn left the Company in early 1997. Mr. Mason is President and CEO of The Marden Companies.
Marden Rehabilitation began operations by purchasing a physician-owned outpatient physical therapy clinic in Stow, Ohio. Immediately thereafter, our Medicare Certified Rehabilitation Agency, Marden Rehabilitation Associates of Portage County, Inc. (“MRAPC”), was formed (Stow is in Portage County, Ohio). Marden Rehabilitation Services, Inc. (“MRS”) also began at this time, anticipating contract therapy operations outside of the Rehab Agency.
In 1991 MRS added contract therapy operations for skilled nursing facilities in Ohio. Pennsylvania operations were added in July of 1993 and West Virginia in April of 1994. From 1992 through 1997 Marden Rehab expanded its SNF and outpatient rehab services.
At the end of 1997, Health Care Plus (“HCP”) and Preferred Care Plus (“PCP”) were acquired by Marden, adding home health services, including intermittent skilled nursing care, continuous private duty care, and staffing throughout central Ohio. Cynthia Bowersock-Thiel founded HCP in 1991 and PCP in 1994. Ms. Bowersock-Thiel serves as a Vice President of The Marden Companies.
From 1997 to today, Marden Rehabilitation Associates, Inc. and its subsidiaries (The Marden Companies) continue to provide medical rehabilitation services and home health services. Rehabilitation services include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech/language pathology services in outpatient clinics, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, continuing care retirement communities, physician offices and assisted living facilities throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Home health services include in-home nursing, rehabilitation services, custodial care and medical staffing services.
The Marden Companies are privately held and for profit. We are a growth
Company and one of the few truly integrated ancillary healthcare providers
capable of supplying services in a wide variety of settings.
